Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. Her performance as a singer, music as well as a film and television artist has won the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was born in and raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita a schoolteacher who worked at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. as a police officer. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah, who was born and raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word which means "delicate and gentle". The cousin she had granted it to her in the age of eight. Latifah was always tall and tall. Standing 5'10" She was a strong forward for her high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show at her highschool. Latifah started to beatbox with the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
